On October 12, 2023, Hill International joins the rest of Spain in celebration of the country’s National Day, the Fiesta Nacional de España. The national holiday is extra joyous for Hill’s professionals this year, as 2023 marks Hill’s 25th anniversary in Spain. This anniversary represents a significant milestone for our professionals in the country and our entire global brand. Over the past quarter-century, Hill has become an integral part of Spain’s dynamic construction landscape, contributing to the growth and transformation of the nation. We are proud of our work here and look forward to many more years of helping Spain’s clients deliver the infrastructure of change.
Strong Foundations: Our Exceptional Professionals
Since our establishment in Spain in 1998, Hill has shored up our growth in the country by maintaining a team of exceptional talent with an unwavering commitment to delivering excellence in project and construction management. Our Spanish team comprises more than 120 professionals with diverse talents and a full range of experience and credentials. In our country offices in Madrid and Barcelona, these tremendous professionals take creative, multi-disciplinary approaches to providing the best possible management consultancy support to every one of their clients.
An Impressive Portfolio
Over the past 25 years, Hill has managed an impressive 2,400 projects in Spain, spanning diverse sectors, including infrastructure, commercial, residential, hospitality and more. The collective construction value of these projects exceeds €10 billion. In building this portfolio, our teams have solidified Hill’s reputation as a trusted partner for project owners and stakeholders across Spain. Leveraging the experience gained and relationships cultivated through our history in the country, Hill continues to win work apace. Our project teams currently manage 124 projects in Spain. For each of these assignments, Hill’s program, project, and construction managers use global best practices to promote compliance with relevant industry and European Union standards for quality and safety.
An Impact Beyond Construction
Hill’s impact extends well beyond construction sites. Our company has been instrumental in managing the delivery of 4.1 thousand hotel rooms, 4.4 million SM of residential space, and more than 35 thousand residential units. This work directly contributes to enhanced quality of life for residents and visitors to the country. Hill has also been a key player in managing the delivery of 1.8 million SM of commercial and retail space, contributing to Spain’s vibrant business landscape. In addition, Hill has managed the delivery of 125 MW of data center capacity, showcasing our readiness to diversify and meet the country’s evolving needs.
Leadership That Inspires
Country Manager Pilar Pereira has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s success in the Spanish market. She is supported by a talented group of operations directors, Fernando Ortiz, Maria Jesus Olmo, Angel Chicharro, Martin Murphy, Ignacio Vivas, and Data Center Leader – Western Europe Victor Krzyzaniak. Other leaders include the Head of Hill’s Cost Management Department Concepción Jerez, whose team provides accurate and timely estimates that help our managers deliver projects within budget.
Sector Highlights
Industrial and Technology
Hill’s work in Spain’s industrial and technology sectors includes the management of data centers—including hyperscale data centers—substation projects, airport baggage handling systems, and a variety of energy, green-energy, and sustainability projects.
The digital transformation of companies, hybrid models of work, and the implementation of 5G are just some of the factors leading to an increase in demand for cloud services and new data center capacity around the world. With years of experience managing data center projects on behalf of the main players in Spain’s data center sector, Hill looks forward to helping developers, investors, and data center owners and operators develop the country’s next generation of data infrastructure.
Hospitality
From the refurbishment of iconic establishments like the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, the Rosewood Villa Magna, and the Four Seasons Formentor to the transformation of historical gems like the five-star Antigua Fábrica de Tabacos in Seville and new construction projects like the Six Senses Ibiza, Hill has consistently helped Spain’s hospitality clients achieve the highest standards of luxury and project performance.
One notable example is the Madrid EDITION Hotel project, where Hill helped the client execute a multi-phase transformation of an office building into a luxurious, five-star hotel. The Madrid EDITION Hotel’s interior spans 25,000 SM and comprises 177 rooms, 21 suites, and 2 lavish penthouses, each with its own outdoor pool. Additional features include a spa-wellness facility, two restaurants, two cocktail bars, and a terrace with a rooftop infinity pool. The hotel also provides 350 SM of meeting room space and 200 SM of ballroom space.
Hill provided project management services for the transformation, including design, procurement, and construction management, along with FF&E and OS&E works supervision. Hill’s support spanned the entire project life cycle, from concept through two construction phases.
Healthcare
Hill’s work in Spain’s healthcare sector showcases our diversified service offerings in the country. For example, Hill provided project management office services for multiple projects executed via a public-private partnership (PPP). These include:
Hill is also providing facilities management and project management oversight services to the Technical Control Unit, or Unidad Técnica de Control (UTC), of the Madrid Department of Health. The UTC is a unit of the Madrid Health Service responsible for monitoring, controlling, and evaluating the outsourced facility management services against key performance indicators in the contracts of hospitals managed under concessions and of the services managed centrally in the hospitals of the Madrid Department of Health.
Commercial
Hill has played a pivotal role in delivering exceptional office projects throughout Spain, helping our clients set new standards in architectural excellence and sustainability. Among the most prominent projects in the team’s commercial portfolio are the 250,000 SM, 93-meter-tall BBVA Headquarters project in Madrid (designed by Herzog & de Meuron) and the 107,000 SM, 250-meter-tall Cepsa Headquarters in Madrid’s “Four Towers” Business Area (designed by Norman Foster).
Currently, Hill is providing project management services for the design, tendering, construction, and handover phases of the 23,000 SM, 117-meter-tall New Colon Towers project in Madrid. This project includes the refurbishment of an existing building (excluding structural components), consolidation and reinforcement works, construction of four additional office levels, and comprehensive renovation of the building’s façade, installations, partitions, common areas, etc. The project aims to meet the requirements for a Nearly Zero Energy Building certification, an AEO A+ rating, and a WELL Gold certification.
Residential
With services ranging from due diligence and design review to bid management and project monitoring, Hill provides a customized suite of high-quality project management support for clients undertaking build-to-rent and build-to-sell residential projects in bustling cities and resort towns throughout Spain. In addition to traditional residential projects, Hill has developed expertise in managing alternative residential projects such as nursing homes, senior living, student residences, and more. So, no matter how Spain’s housing landscape evolves in the years to come, Hill is ready to help our clients deliver their residential projects on time, within budget, and as envisioned.
