Hill, in joint venture, provided technical consultancy services for multiple projects associated with the implementation of the Thessaloniki Metro, a grade of automation 4—i.e. fully automated—metro system. A convenient and sustainable alternative to driving and a complement to the city’s existing bus network, the Thessaloniki Metro enhances mobility, economic opportunity, and quality of life throughout Greece’s second largest city.
The system’s main component, the Base Project, comprised the construction of a 9.6 KM underground mainline with 2 tracks and 13 stations, strategically positioned beneath key city thoroughfares and central locations. The Base Project also encompassed the construction of a depot in the Pylea area, including an administrative headquarters, an operations control center, and an emergency control center for train stabling, maintenance, and repairs. The Base Project was commissioned in November 2024 and is currently in revenue service.
A 4.78 km extension, encompassing the delivery of 5 additional stations and 15 new trains, expanded the Thessaloniki Metro network through the creation of a new branch serving Kalamaria. Integrating the extension into the existing operational system was a key challenge requiring careful interoperability testing, safety validation, and commissioning support. The extension opened to passengers in August 2026.
As technical consultant, Hill coordinated across technical disciplines and assessed complex civil, rail, and electromechanical challenges, offering solutions and optimization recommendations throughout each project’s life cycle. Our services also included design review, surveys, procurement support, construction supervision and coordination, risk management, quality assurance/quality control, systems integration, interface management, safety oversight, and testing and commissioning.
Hill continues to help Elliniko Metro plan future projects, including expansions of the Thessaloniki Metro to the city’s western suburbs and Thessaloniki Airport. Additionally, our team supports the transfer of knowledge, best practices, and lessons learned across Elliniko Metro’s portfolio of projects nationwide, contributing to the agency’s development of transit infrastructure throughout Greece.
