Hill is providing project management and technical assistance services for the Cairo Metro Line 3 project. This new mass transit system will accommodate Cairo’s growing population, as well as help remedy escalating traffic and roadway issues.
Currently, Line 3 connects Attaba in east-central Cairo with the Adly Mansour metro station. Once complete, the line will extend from the northwest of the Greater Cairo area at Imbaba to the northeast serving Cairo International Airport. The line will cross the River Nile twice at the western branch between Kit Kat and Zamalek and the eastern branch between Zamalek and downtown Cairo. The total length of the line will be approximately 30.6 km, of which 28.1 km will be underground, with work implemented in 4 phases. The project also includes a main workshop adjacent to the western terminal of the line and a light repair workshop at the middle of the line at Abbassia station.
Hill’s scope for Line 3 encompasses approximately 17.7 km of the alignment with 15 stations (7 at-grade or elevated and 8 underground) and systems, civil works, power, track works, and rolling stock. Phase 3 is subdivided to 3 sub phases: 3A (about 5.2 km and 5 underground stations), 3B (about 6.3 km and 4 elevated stations), and 3C (about 6.2 km and 5 stations).
Key elements of the work include ensuring safe crossing of major underground structures: the bored tunnel for Line 2 at Attaba and the wastewater spine tunnel north of Attaba. In addition, some of the underground stations will serve as commercial centers, with these stations constructed using the cut-and-cover method and rolling stock fed by power through a third rail. Also, the entire length of the alignment will feature cashless fare collection. These project components present several technical and managerial challenges, which Hill is overseeing to verify compliance with the approved design documents and national and international engineering standards.
Hill’s project monitoring and controls on the project will help Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels in providing quality, reliable transportation to the traveling public.
