Project Value $13 million

The City and County of San Francisco, acting through the Airport Commission, authorized a design-build contract for a new Tier II, Class A – COLO Redundant (N+1) mission-critical data center as part of the City’s plan to consolidate its many server locations by relocating and consolidating existing servers from an existing data center. Hill provided project and construction management support services for the data center. The facility is 58,000 SF and located west of the International Terminal Building at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Hill’s services included design review management, construction management, project controls (document management, schedule management, and change management), and move-in commissioning/coordination. The project underwent a complete last-minute redesign effort that required additional design work to incorporate the consolidation of additional SFO servers. In addition, the City required the project be completed in ten months. Hill’s project implementation strategy employed a collaborative design-build support approach to improve quality in design while meeting the accelerated schedule.

Hill’s guidance and direction proved invaluable in delivering effective communication between the client and the design-build contractor, as our PM/CM efforts enabled the contractor to keep pace with the rapid design and construction, support the trade contractors to adhere to the completion deadline, and maintain costs.

The new data center won several awards, including an Honorable Mention: Best Transportation Project Between $5-15 Million from CMAA’s Northern California Chapter and the Western Consumers Construction Council’s Project Excellence Award – Buildings, Infrastructure, Advanced Technologies.
