Hill International Receives Skillsoft “Innovation Award” for Revamping Employee Learning and Development Programs

Hill International, Inc. (Hill) received an Innovation Award in Compliance and Ethics Excellence for its Learning and Development (L&D) program accomplishments through Hill University, the company’s online education and training platform. The platform is supported by Skillsoft, a global learning management company that provides cloud-based training software.

Presented during the Skillsoft Perspectives 2019 Conference, the Innovation Awards acknowledge customer and partner success in learning and development, talent management, and workforce management. A panel of Skillsoft subject matter experts and industry analysts review criteria based on innovative ideas, programs, and leaders transforming the corporate learning and talent management landscape through Skillsoft’s products and services.

“We are honored to receive this award,” says Elizabeth Whalen, Hill’s Director of Learning and Development. “The proposer training and educational programs provide us with opportunities to reach our full potential, and Hill employees consistently demonstrate this through their passion for serving our clients each day.”

In 2019, Hill continues to make significant strides in revamping the company’s educational and professional development offerings for employees. Whalen and the L&D team have streamlined Hill’s Human Resources Orientation modules to save new employees time while still providing the right training resources, including bringing back Ethics and Harassment modules to emphasize the importance of ethics, diversity, and inclusion. In addition, the team is building a Hill University Onboarding Curriculum to provide 24/7 access to engaging, YouTube-style video shorts on such topics as safety, timesheets, and expense reports.

Hill is also refreshing its compliance and safety training programs to reduce and eliminate redundancies, resulting in more customized and relevant content. This includes supplementing full-version courses with quarterly assigned Legal Impacts and Compliance Shorts. Programs are delivered in multiple languages across all regions.

“These changes and updates will improve knowledge transfer while saving billable hours,” explains Whalen. “With the Skillsoft platform, we can create customized curriculums on Hill University to meet the needs of our clients, departments, individual employees, and to resolve any issues.”

Current key initiatives for L&D include integrating onboarding into Hill University Onboarding Curriculum to not only accommodate mobile employees, but also provide all employees with valuable resources on systems, benefits, and processes on a 24/7 basis.

L&D is building Learning Paths for Hill disciplines, including a proposed program allowing Hill to grow our own professionals by providing multiple career paths, including business development and leadership, designed to engage and retain employees. The proposed “Construct a Project Manager” program will allow Hill to work with a new hire with little or no construction experience, but who possesses problem-solving skills, a mechanical aptitude, and integrity, and grow them into a Project Manager. This will be accomplished through a nationally recognized credential program – National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), as well as Hill’s own subject matter experts.

While the program is open to anyone, Hill is targeting veterans and women to provide them with life-long career opportunities. The program will couple online and classroom courses through Hill University with learning from Hill’s experts in the field, affording both theoretical and practical skills. The Compliance, Desktop Skills, Project Management, Six Sigma, and Leadership modules support this multi-year program.

“In addition to improving how we reach employees with more customized content, our goal is to use Hill’s own resources to build our employees,” says Whalen. “We are looking forward to seeing these opportunities engage and grow our employees professionally, elevate our brand, and benefit our clients.”
