Construction’s Digital Transformation & The Tools of Modern Project Management
Several airports for which Hill has provided project management and other consulting services have been named to the American City Business Journal’s Airport Power Rankings. Of the list’s top 20, 13 were airports for which Hill has provided project management or other construction consulting services. In fact, the list’s top ranking went to the San Jose International Airport, for which Hill provided project management for several capital projects, ranging from a new terminal and parking garage to lighting upgrades and airfield improvements.
The inaugural list, published earlier this month, included a total of 89 “best-run” airports in the U.S. Airports were assessed on their growth, profitability, efficiency and customer satisfaction, among other factors. According to the ACBJ, the rankings “were derived from a weighted formula that prioritized growth particularly in the categories of non-aeronautical revenue, profitability and passenger enplanements, while also applying efficiency scores compiled by Jeffrey Camm, the Inmar Presidential Chair in Business Analytics at Wake Forest University’s school of business.”
The list was created as airports throughout the country are expanding at historic rates, and as the industry awaits signs from the Trump administration that federal funds will be allotted to get even more capital projects on the tarmac.
Hill Senior Vice President Mike Smith, who leads Hill’s Western Region, isn’t surprised that Hill projects top the list.
“There’s a direct correlation between an airport’s capital projects and its overall success,” Smith said. “Airports that are continually improving are more likely to attract both airlines and passengers, and those improvements fuel airports’ efficiency, growth, and profitability, both in the near and long terms.”
Many airports across the U.S. are expanding and improving. An improving U.S. economy, an uptick in air travel, and increased public funding for transportation projects have placed capital projects back on the drawing boards at many international and regional airports.
“Every major airport is undertaking billion-dollar plans to upgrade and keep up with both the size of the larger aircraft and the [increasing] number of smaller aircraft. Regional airports also are seeing a need to expand to meet passenger demand,” said Hill Senior Vice President and Regional Manager Michael V. Griffin, P.E. “It’s a constantly changing industry, and a lot of airports have terminals that are in need of upgrading or replacement.”
Hill provides myriad services to the industry, ranging from comprehensive management of capital programs, to management of distinct projects, to specialized consulting and staff augmentation services on an ad-hoc or continuous basis.
“We are incredibly proud that so many airports with which we’ve been associated have been named to the ACBJ’s Airport Power Ranking,” said Hill President and Chief Operating Officer Raouf S. Ghali.
Those airports, and their respective rankings, include:
1. San Jose International Airport
2. Los Angeles International Airport
4. San Diego International Airport
7. Miami International Airport
8. McCarran International Airport
9. San Francisco International Airport
11. Kansas City International Airport
13. New Orleans International Airport
14. General Edward Lawrence Logan Airport
15. Salt Lake City International Airport
16. Dallas Love Field
17. John F. Kennedy International Airport
18. Nashville International Airport
“The success of these airports is a testament to their vision and forethought; their recognition that the key to success is continually improving, continually expanding and continually striving to meet the changing demands of the industry,” Ghali said. “We are honored that they’ve called upon Hill to help them realize those successes.”
