The Homestead-Grays Bridge, formerly known as the Pittsburgh-Homestead Bridge, was originally constructed in 1936. The 3,810 LF bridge consists of 17 spans, seven are simple spans with steel girders, and 10 spans consist of a continuous Wichert Truss. The renovation project widened the roadway surface, replaced sidewalks, installed new highway lighting, and repainted the superstructure. Repairs included replacing 1.6 million pounds of structural steel, placing 5,000 tons of superpave asphalt, and painting 1 million SF of existing steel. A major challenge was maintaining traffic flow on the bridge and to the busy Waterfront Development while performing the work.
