Project Value $450 million

Genentech, a Roche Group company, initiated a project control partnership program to build more effective relationships with designated project controls firms delivering services for large U.S. capital projects valued at more than $10 million. The specific goals of this program include increasing the quality of service and promoting continuous improvement. Genentech chose Hill based on our innovation and our ability to add value to Genentech’s projects. The decision involved a competitive procurement process, with plans of developing chosen firms into partners to deliver ongoing services.

Hill is currently providing support for the first phase of a $450 million program involving a complete renovation of utilities and related infrastructure to support Genentech’s K6 South San Francisco (SSF) Utility Infrastructure Program. This program focuses on carbon footprint improvements at the SSF campus, which serves as both Genentech’s corporate headquarters and Roche’s U.S. operational headquarters. This program is part of Roche’s company-wide initiative to support a commitment to sustainable development. An important program objective includes eliminating the use of substances negatively impacting the environment as well as implementing side-wide infrastructure improvements to advance the reliability, efficiency, and overall performance of the campus utility system.

Hill immediately mobilized an experienced, cross-trained team of project control professionals, in addition to several subject matter experts, to provide remote quality control support. As a result of our initial efforts, Genentech subsequently commissioned the team to develop a monthly program status report to ultimately become the standard for all other SSF-based projects and programs. In addition, the program status report will be applied to the rest of Genentech’s sites across the U.S.

Genentech also requested Hill’s expertise and resources to help manage the implementation of a new Roche-mandated document control system. The system included training for most of the K6 program team members. After a highly successful completion, Genentech requested Hill to continue to provide similar services for all other SSF projects and programs.

“Hill International’s Project Controls team on the K6 Program has performed exceedingly well. The K6 Program is currently under budget and on schedule.” -Ali Afghan, Genentech Program Director
