Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) will be opening phase one of its $4 billion airport redevelopment program (ARP) in September 2020. Last month, Hill CEO Raouf Ghali, Senior Vice President Mike Smith, and Aviation Director Scott Feldmann took an on-site tour of the project during the last stages of construction with Area Manager Edward Meigs, Construction Field Engineer Calyx Hoag, and Program Controls Manager Charles Idehen. During the tour, all were impressed by the massive project.
Raouf says, “I am very pleased that I had the opportunity to walk the project to better understand the quality, size, and complexity that the project team has to manage. I am impressed by the dedication and hard work of everyone involved!”
The SLC ARP is not an expansion or modernization project. Rather, through the program, SLCis constructing a brand new international airport adjacent to an existing facility, without disrupting standard airport operations. Hill has been a part of the project since 2013 before groundbreaking in 2014, as part of the program management team (PMT). In this role, Hill’s scope includes project controls, quality assurance and quality control, document control, commissioning, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing overview.
Hill’s leadership team had a chance to visit the construction offices, meet other PMT members, and talk with SLC personnel. Before the tour, Program Director Mike Williams provided a project update to Hill’s leadership. The team concluded the tour after taking a trip to the central utility plant, parking garage, gateway building, terminal building, pedestrian bridge, mid-concourse tunnel, and the baggage handling system.
After the tour, Mike Smith noted, “This is a unique large program with multiple components with many team members involved, from designers to contractors. The PMT has been able to scale up and down to provide the services needed, when they were needed to keep the ARP on track. It’s a project we’re very proud to be a part of.”
Substantial features of the new airport include:
The Central Utility Plant: a 40,000 SF building that will house up to 20 full time employees and operate 24/7 with five 1,000 ton chillers, four 25 million Btu boilers, and five cooling towers.
The Parking Garage: 1,729,240 SF with 3,600 parking stalls on four levels, four escalators, 9,000 tons of rebar and 90,000 cubic yards of concrete, totaling approximately three football fields combined in size.
The Terminal Building: a 908,754 SF structure with 16 security screening lanes including two international lanes, 18 escalators, and plaza windows 45 feet in height. It consists of 11,007 tons of structural steel and 22 miles of steel piles. This will house the Delta Sky Club, a 27,000 SF deck with numerous concessions.
Concourse A (South Concourse): a$300,599,792 concourse with a length of 12 football fields. Its west area is 456,630 SF and its east area is 370,720 SF. The first phase includes 25 gates, six of which are international gates) and five escalators. The second phase will add 22 gates.
Baggage Handling System: approximately 6 miles in length, using both bar code and radio frequency identification tracking.
Concourse B (North Concourse): a separately managed construction management at-risk project comprising 2,252 linear feet. This is a $535,523,892 project. Its west area is 476,650 SF and its east area is 364,480 SF, with a future expansion that will add 1,158 linear feet. The first phase includes 20 gates. The second phase includes 11 gates, with ability to add 15 more gates. 2,920 stone columns and 1,020 steel piles were installed. It will have nine escalators and a 6,000 SF Delta Sky Club.
